  • To be responsible for providing a specialist clinical psychology service within neuro developmental services, in accordance with objectives agreed with Professional and Service managers.
  • To formulate and implement plans for the formal psychological treatment and/or management of a patient’s psychological needs, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of the patient’s problems.
  • To be responsible for implementing a range of psychological interventions for children, parents/carers, families and groups.
  • To assess and evaluate information from the child, family and significant others, multi-disciplinary medical team and external agencies relating to medical condition and developmental status and incorporate this information into a clinical formulation.
  • To evaluate and make decisions about treatment options taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual, family or group.
  • To provide specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to patients’ formulation, diagnosis and treatment plan.
  • To contribute directly and indirectly to a psychologically based framework of understanding and care to the benefit of all patients of the service, across all settings and agencies serving the patient group.
  • To undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual patients and to provide advice to other professions on psychological aspects of risk assessment and risk management.
  • To communicate in a skilled and sensitive manner, information concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment plans of patients under the specialist team’s care.
  • To attend as required, case conferences, reviews and other meetings, as appropriate.
  • To ensure that reports and other correspondence are entered into the relevant notes and communicated to other professionals, parents and children, as appropriate.


  • Accredited post-graduate qualification in Clinical or Forensic Psychology
  • Registration with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) (or qualification pending)
  • The drive to learn and develop
  • A commitment to patient-centred care and to values-based and evidence-based practice
  • A flexible, positive, team-orientated approach
  • Some post-registration experience is desirable, though not essential
  • Experience of working with patients detained under the Mental Health Act (1983/2007) and in a forensic mental health setting is advantageous
