THE ROLE:

  1. To perform advanced neurological physiotherapy assessments and treatment to patients, often with diverse, complex, or multiple pathologies and presentations.
  2. To work as an autonomous practitioner to formulate a treatment plan and management programme according to assessment findings and to develop and maintain high standards of patient care.
  3. To be an integral member of the physiotherapy team and MDT, contributing to the management of the department and the training and supervision of students, assistants and other health care professionals.
  4. To contribute to the management and development of staff especially with regard to all aspects of clinical governance and to deputise for senior staff as required.
  5. To utilise research skills for audit, policy, service development and clinical research.
  6. To provide an advanced neurological physiotherapy service to primary and tertiary referred patients.
  7. To implement policy changes within the neurophysiotherapy service and the wider organisation.
  8. To be able to exert moderate to intense physical effort for frequent periods throughout the working day e.g. crawl, kneel, squat, crouch, bend during assessment and treatment of neurological patients and also manoeuvre manual handling equipment around the centre.

Clinical

  1. To undertake the comprehensive assessment of a wide range of patients including those with diverse or complex neurological presentations, using advanced manual assessment techniques and clinical reasoning skills to determine impairments and disabilities and to formulate a diagnosis / hypothesis and prognosis.
  2. To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of professional activities, working as an autonomous practitioner and seeking advice from more experienced staff where appropriate.
  3. To formulate, plan and deliver a specialised, individual patient centred physiotherapy treatment programme based on sound knowledge of evidence based practice and treatment options using clinical assessment, outcome measures, excellent reasoning skills and knowledge of treatment skills e.g. therapeutic manual physiotherapy techniques, patient education, vestibular exercises classes etc.
  4. To liaise with families, carers and significant others where appropriate to ensure patients’ needs are met to a high standard.
  5. To constantly evaluate and monitor patient’s needs, adjusting physiotherapy practice as necessary; including adjusting intervention for rapidly deteriorating and unstable patients.
  6. To collaborate with medical colleagues, other health care professionals and others within/outside the service to achieve maximum advantage from planning co-ordinated care.
  7. To represent physiotherapy issues and negotiate with other multi-disciplinary team members in managing complex cases, in case conferences, and when co-ordinating referrals.
  8. To contribute to the discharge planning process in accordance with the Blackheath Brain Injury Rehabilitation Services Patient Pathway Policy, liaising with community/outpatient service and voluntary organisations, as appropriate.
  9. To use highly developed physical skills to support patients who have neurological impairment and or balance problems patients when walking and transferring them.

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE:

  1. Recognised physiotherapy degree qualification or equivalent
  2. Registered with the Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC )
  3. Completion of relevant post-graduate Neuro- training related to professional group
  4. Member of professional organisation relevant to professional group
  5. Excellent leadership skills
  6. Understanding of issues affecting care provision for patients with brain injuries in the rehabilitation setting and beyond
  7. Ability to work efficiently, effectively and professionally within the MDT
  8. The physical skills and capabilities for the assessment and skilled therapeutic treatment of patients with acute, chronic and progressive neurological disability both on the wards and in the therapy treatment areas
