This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a great time at a specialist residential school for children aged students aged 7-19 with a diagnosis of autism, or whose difficulties place them on the autistic continuum.

As the School Bursar you will have the responsibility for the management of the following departments:

  • Domestic household services
  • Catering
  • Finance

The role requires the use of initiative and the ability to act for the Head by directly managing, supervising and supporting teams of core staff to ensure a safe, healthy, clean, attractive and comfortable living environment is provided for students and staff and to manage catering and nutritional welfare of the students. There is an expectation to act with a high degree of autonomy. It includes responsibility for managing delegated budgets and resources.

It also involves creating, implementing, monitoring and evaluating development plans aimed at bringing about continual improvement in these areas.


  • Act as a senior professional in the core team and manage the whole staff and all resources available in a manner that delivers an efficient and effective core service.
  • To share with the leadership team, evaluating the risk of, and protecting the students from, threats to their health, welfare and normal development, both from inside and outside the establishment and to follow strictly the company Policy and Procedures.
  • To ensure that all parts of the school environment are safe, welcoming, clean, hygienic, and sensitive to the needs of the students being looked after.
  • To gear the running of the core services (catering and domestic) to meet the expressed needs of the individual students as necessary, using the school’s environment as a means of support and social learning for the young people.
  • To actively develop and maintain good working relationships with:
    • School staff and students, Inspectors and other outside agencies and visitors
    • Parents and other family members
    • Group Managers and Directors
  • To provide, high professional standards of record keeping, and reports related to household matters.
  • To participate in and undertake regular audits of the quality systems as necessary.
  • To undertake regular inspections and address matters which fall below required standards.
  • To liaise with Estates and Site Managers when necessary to ensure that students’ specific needs are met.
  • To ensure compliance with all current and prevailing national regulations and inspection standards, relevant to core functions, for this type of establishment.
  • To ensure compliance with all current and prevailing national regulations for Environmental Health and the standards of the regulatory body for inspections.
  • To take responsibility, as the senior manager of the core staff, for dealing directly with individuals and teams to provide effective and pro-active leadership, guidance and management.
  • To manage and operate budgets, continuously monitoring expenditure, including that relating to core and administration staffing, to ensure spending is within the figures and guidelines laid down and to alert an appropriate manager if budgets are nearing spending limits.


  • Experience of working effectively in a catering, hospitality and/or residential support service environment
  • Experience of managing budgets competently
  • Have experience of managing others
  • Have experience of delivering good quality training and coaching
  • Be enthusiastic, committed and flexible
  • Be resilient
  • Have excellent communication skills
  • Be able to lead and work as part of a team


CSBM or equivalent – working towards or qualified
